Journey with us live through the secrets of Ancient Egyptian remedies and the wisdom of Thoth, blending oils, herbs, and rituals in real time. 

This course explores the intersection of medicine, spirituality, and aromatics in Ancient Egypt, guided by the wisdom traditions attributed to Thoth, the divine scribe and healer.

Students will uncover how remedies and scents shaped healing, ritual, and daily life, while practicing modern applications of these ancient traditions.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Understand the cosmological framework of Ancient Egyptian healing.
  2. Analyze the role of Thoth in medicine, writing, and the preservation of remedies.
  3. Study Egyptian medical papyri (Ebers, Edwin Smith, Kahun) in relation to aromatherapy.
  4. Identify key botanicals and their therapeutic, ritualistic, and symbolic uses.
  5. Recreate ancient formulations (oils, incense, salves) using modern aromatherapy techniques.
  6. Integrate ancient wisdom into contemporary holistic healing practices.

Course Modules

Module 1 – Cosmology of Healing: Egypt’s Spiritual Framework

  • Concepts of Ka, Ba, Akh and their relation to health.
  • The principle of Ma’at (cosmic balance) in healing.
  • The temples as centers of medicine and ritual.
  • Introduction to Thoth: God of writing, healing, time, and the divine record keeper.

Module 2 – Thoth and the Written Word of Medicine

  • Thoth as patron of scribes and medicine.
  • How knowledge of remedies was recorded and preserved.
  • Examination of hieroglyphic inscriptions related to healing and plants.
  • The role of Thoth in guiding physicians, priests, and perfumers.

Module 3 – Ancient Medical Papyri & Remedies

  • Deep dive into Ebers Papyrus (remedies for digestion, fertility, wounds).
  • Edwin Smith Papyrus (surgery, anatomy, trauma medicine).
  • Kahun Papyrus (gynecology and women’s health).
  • How these texts reference oils, resins, and aromatic preparations.

Module 4 – Materia Medica of Ancient Egypt

  • Study of key botanicals:
    • Frankincense, Myrrh, Blue Lotus, Black Seed, Henna, Cinnamon, Papyrus, Juniper, Cedar, Lotus, Coriander.
  • Trade routes and imported luxury aromatics (Punt, Lebanon, Nubia).
  • Symbolism of plants: lotus as rebirth, frankincense as purification, black seed as divine protection.

Module 5 – Sacred Rituals and Incense

  • Daily temple rituals: “awakening the gods” with scents.
  • Incense as medicine for both body and spirit.
  • Thoth’s association with lunar cycles and timing of ritual preparation.

Module 6 – Remedies of Beauty and Longevity

  • Oils and salves for skin, hair, and rejuvenation.
  • Recipes for perfumed oils, salves, and kohl.
  • Protective, cosmetic, and spiritual dimensions of Egyptian beauty.

Module 7 – Healing through Fragrance & the Spirit of Thoth

  • Scent as a bridge between human and divine realms.
  • Fragrance in funerary rituals and mummification.
  • The “Words of Power” (heka) spoken alongside aromatic use.
  • Meditation with Egyptian oils for clarity and healing.

Module 8 – Practical Blending Workshops

  • Recreating an ancient salve based on the Ebers Papyrus.
  • Crafting a Blue Lotus meditation oil.
  • Creating a personal Egyptian-inspired blend guided by Ma’at and Thoth’s wisdom.

Module 9 – Modern Integration

  • Scientific research on Black Seed, Frankincense, and Lotus.
  • Comparing ancient remedies with modern clinical aromatherapy.
  • Ethical sourcing, sustainability, and cultural respect.
  • Designing case studies and modern wellness protocols inspired by Egyptian wisdom.

Module 10 – Capstone: The Scribe of Remedies

  • Each student creates their own Egyptian-inspired formula.
  • Write a “Papyrus of Remedies” entry, documenting historical inspiration, modern use, and aromatherapy notes as if guided by Thoth’s scribing.
  • Final ritual presentation: a ceremonial offering of blends/incense in honor of Ma’at and Thoth.

  • Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea / Nymphaea lotus)
    • Symbol of rebirth, used in rituals, temple offerings, perfumes, and wine infusions.
    • Today: relaxation, meditation, dreamwork.
  • Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus)
    • Symbol of Lower Egypt; used in perfumes, medicine, and writing.
    • Today: rare in aromatherapy but symbolic in formulations.
  • Cedarwood (Cedrus libani)
    • Used in temple incense, mummification, and purification.
    • Today: grounding, antiseptic, skin and respiratory support.

 Medicinal Botanicals

  • Black Seed (Nigella sativa)
    • “Panacea” in Ebers Papyrus.
    • Today: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immune-supportive.
  • Garlic (Allium sativum)
    • Used in remedies for parasites and circulatory issues.
    • Today: antimicrobial, cardiovascular health.
  • Juniper (Juniperus spp.)
    • Used for digestive and antiseptic remedies.
    • Today: diuretic, detoxifying, cleansing.
  • Coriander (Coriandrum sativum)
    • Spice and digestive remedy in Ebers Papyrus.
    • Today: digestive, detox, anti-inflammatory.
  • Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum)
    • Used in gynecological and digestive remedies.
    • Today: supports digestion, lactation.

Resins & Incense Plants

  • Frankincense (Boswellia sacra / carterii)
    • Burned in temples, used in mummification and medicine.
    • Today: calming, respiratory, skin-healing, meditative.
  • Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)
    • Sacred incense, embalming, wound healing.
    • Today: antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, grounding.
  • Opopanax / Sweet Myrrh (Commiphora erythraea)
    • Related resin, used in incense and medicine.

Plants

  • Henna (Lawsonia inermis)
    • Used for hair, nails, and body decoration; mentioned in papyri.
    • Today: natural dye, cooling, antimicrobial.
  • Rose (Rosa spp.) (introduced later but became central)
    • Perfume, medicine, cosmetics.
    • Today: emotional balance, skincare.
  • Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum / C. cassia)
    • Used in perfumes and medicine.
    • Today: warming, antimicrobial, circulation.
  • Mint (Mentha spp.)
